We drive BMW’s potent M240i xDrive

We recently spent time in the new fuel-efficient BMW 220d M Sport Coupé, and we were blown away by the entry level 2-series. The gears have shifted, and we had the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé on test.

    Exterior

Outside, our M240i xDrive test car is finished with an appealing Bernina Grey metallic paint and sports bicolour style 792M light alloy wheels wrapped with 19-inch run-flat rubber. At the rear the M240i xDrive sets itself apart with a more pronounced rear diffuser and trapezoidal exhaust trims. The design oozes confidence and aggressiveness thanks to its low stance and mean-looking front end.

    Interior

Stepping inside, the M240i sports the manufacturers familiar minimalist and premium cockpit design. Highlights include an 8.8-inch touch display with crisp graphics and an intuitive infotainment that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front sport seats and model-specific M-steering wheel. The infotainment works well and is intuitive.

The compact performance coupé offers great space for two occupants and their luggage. On short trips, the rear seats do come in handy and can be used unlike in some coupes or convertibles.

    Performance and drive

Powering the new M240i xDrive is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline 6-cylinder petrol engine which is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The powerplant develops 285kW and 500Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system. BMW claims that the potent 2 Series coupé  will do the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds and will average 8.1l/100 km.

Firing up the new BMW M240i xDrive coupé, you are greeted by an unmistakable bassy soundtrack with subtle crackles. Packing 285kW and 500Nm, the new M240i is quick off the mark and power is available on demand. The ride is smooth, and the drive is engaging as you would expect in the M240i xDrive.

    Final Word

Overall, the pricing of R1,1million could deter some from the M240i xDrive but the everyday usability, and enthralling drive means this might be a must have package.
