We sample the SUV version of the S-Class: Mercedes-Benz EQS 450

In an era where electric vehicles are reshaping the automotive landscape, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 emerges as a beacon of luxury and innovation. As we stepped into the EQS we immediately recognized that this was no ordinary electric vehicle—it was a glimpse into the future of a driving experience, never mind the drop dead gorgeous looks.

The EQS 450 is powered by a formidable electric motor that delivers an impressive 265 kW and 800 Nm of torque. The instant acceleration is exhilarating, propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. With a range of approximately 616 kilometers on a single charge, we felt confident taking it on longer journeys without the constant worry of finding a charging station. The energy efficiency is equally commendable, averaging around 20.6 kWh per 100 km, making it a standout in the luxury EV segment. Handling the EQS is a delight. The air suspension ensures a smooth, serene ride, effortlessly gliding over bumps and imperfections in the road. The steering is light yet precise, providing a refined driving experience that feels both connected and comfortable. Navigating tight turns is surprisingly agile for a vehicle of its size, enhancing the overall driving pleasure.

Step inside, and the cabin is nothing short of extraordinary. The EQS 450 exudes opulence, featuring top-tier materials, ambient lighting, and an ultra-modern design. The expansive 56-inch Hyperscreen stretches across the dashboard, seamlessly integrating multiple displays and serving as the interior’s focal point. The infotainment system, complete with advanced voice recognition, allows for effortless control of navigation, music, and climate settings. Mercedes’ commitment to safety shines through with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking, ensuring peace of mind on every journey. Luxurious touches like heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a premium sound system elevate the driving experience to new heights.

Our time in the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 solidified its status as a leader in the luxury electric vehicle segment. With its spacious interior, cutting-edge technology, and unparalleled performance, it caters to discerning drivers who demand both comfort and sustainability. One thing we were not so impressed about, were the panel gaps on the dash – where the one side, had larger gap than the one side. This was also the case with a previous model.

For a starting price of R2,731,951, the EQS 450 offers exceptional value, bundled with a 5-year/100,000km service plan and a 2-year/unlimited km warranty – but this is also the more reason we fill the need to mention that one caveat. So in closing, we ca say that in a rapidly evolving market, the EQS 450 meets but doesn’t necessarily exceed expectations even though it redefines what a luxury electric vehicle can be.
