The plug-in hybrid Land Rover Defender P400e X-Dynamic HSE might just be the answer for those who want to save the planet without sacrificing style or size. Finished in Woolstone Green, it looks ready for a game drive but wouldn’t be out of place in the valet queue at a boutique hotel. It’s stylish, capable, and just a little bit smug about it.
Exterior design
You still get all the classic Defender hallmarks – squared-off lines, upright stance, and that purposeful attitude – but this one rolls on massive 22-inch wheels and features adaptive matrix LED headlights. It looks premium because it is.
Step inside
Climb aboard and you’re met with a cabin that knows exactly who it’s talking to: the adventurer who likes a bit of leather with their mud. The layout is clean, spacious, and rugged in the right ways. It mixes high-end finishes with practical touches like exposed screws, wipe-clean surfaces, and chunky physical controls that can be used even while wearing gloves. The dual-function rotary dials for both climate and seat heating/ventilation are especially clever.

There’s also a fully digital instrument cluster and an 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, which is responsive and easy to navigate. The panoramic sunroof adds an airy feeling to the cabin, and when the light hits just right, it also doubles as the perfect mood filter for your next road-trip selfie.
Powertrain & performance
Under the bonnet is where the P400e really starts to blur the lines between urban cruiser and green machine. It combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery pack. Together, they produce a healthy 297 kW and 640 Nm. Land Rover claims 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, which is quick enough to surprise the driver of the sports car next to you at the traffic light.
Pure electric range is quoted at 59 km, but we managed closer to 40 km in real-world mixed driving. Once the battery runs dry, you’re looking at around 10.8 L/100 km with fairly relaxed driving. That’s not bad for a behemoth that tips the scales at over 2,500 kg.
Charging & efficiency
Where this Defender really scores points is in its charging capability. From a 7kW home wallbox, you can charge it to 80% in about two hours, perfect for overnight top-ups. More impressively, its 50kW DC fast-charging support – rare for a plug-in hybrid – allows it to reach 80% in as little as 30 minutes if you find a compatible public charger. That puts it ahead of most PHEVs, which are often left sitting around waiting for electrons.
As for claimed fuel consumption, Land Rover says just 2.8L/100 km. Realistically, that figure is only achievable with regular plug-in discipline. But even if you don’t top up every night, the P400e is still more efficient than most large petrol SUVs.

Ride comfort
Thanks to air suspension, the ride is gloriously smooth. It soaks up bumps, potholes, and speed humps with ease. Whether you’re gliding through city traffic or heading out on a gravel road, it manages to feel composed and comfortable. It also doesn’t lean too heavily into corners, which is impressive for something shaped like a bakkie on protein shakes.
Final word
At a starting price of R2,321,400, the Land Rover Defender P400e X-Dynamic HSE is no small investment. But you do get a unique blend of eco-consciousness, serious performance, and iconic style.
Is it practical? Surprisingly, yes. Is it excessive? Definitely. Do we want one? Also yes.
