Few cars in the world carry the weight of history and passion quite like the BMW 3 Series. For half a century, it has stood as the beating heart of the BMW brand – a car that embodies driving pleasure, everyday usability and timeless design. Now, to mark 50 years of the iconic nameplate, BMW South Africa has introduced a special edition that pays tribute to its legendary past while looking firmly toward the future: the BMW 3 Series 50 Jahre Edition.

    Brief history

The BMW 3 Series story began in 1975 when it stepped into the shoes of the equally iconic BMW 02 Series. From the very first model, the 3 Series became a benchmark for sporty handling, innovative technology and premium quality. Over seven generations, it has gone from strength to strength, selling more than 20 million units worldwide and earning its crown as the best-selling premium car on the planet.

South Africa, too, has played a starring role in this journey. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, just outside Pretoria, built the 3 Series from the second to sixth generation, giving rise to SA-only legends that are still sought after globally. In fact, the 3 Series was the first BMW exported from South Africa back in 1994 – a proud milestone that cemented its bond with local fans.

    Exterior

For the 50 Jahre Edition, BMW has looked to the past for inspiration. The limited-run models bring back signature paint finishes from previous generations, making them instantly stand out. Think Aegean Blue and British Racing Green from the third generation, Stratus Grey from the fourth, and the sixth generation’s beloved Lime Rock Grey.

These nostalgic colours are paired with the M Sport package that adds black high-gloss details and a choice of distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels.

    Interior

Step inside and the cabin continues the celebration. The British Racing Green 320i gets a striking Cognac Sensatec interior with perforated detailing, while the sportier M340i xDrive features black Vernasca leather with blue contrast stitching.

All versions of the 50 Jahre Edition benefit from aluminium interior trim and BMW’s elegant CraftedClarity glass gear selector, adding a touch of luxury to the sporty cockpit. Tech and comfort are also dialled up with features like Comfort Access, Park Assist Plus, Harman Kardon surround sound and the full suite of driver assistance systems.

    Pricing

Only 50 units of the BMW 3 Series 50 Jahre Edition are coming to South Africa – a fitting nod to its 50-year legacy. Here’s what they’ll cost you (including VAT and CO₂ tax):

    1) 320i 50 Jahre Edition – R1,067,730.80

    2) M340i xDrive 50 Jahre Edition – R1,422,607.30
