BAIC has introduced the new B30 to the South African market, aiming to blend affordability with features that are usually reserved for far pricier SUVs. With a starting price of R519 000, the B30 enters the mid-size SUV segment with a mix of technology, comfort and performance that pushes expectations for this price point.
Even the entry-level B30 Elite Adventure comes well equipped. LED lighting, full digital instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels and a wide suite of driver assistance systems are all part of the standard package.
According to Ameena Hassan, Brand and PR Manager at BAIC South Africa, the B30 was developed to give buyers more than the basics. She explains that the goal was to offer advanced safety, design, and practicality at a price South Africans can reach.
Advanced features as standard
Inside, the B30 takes a tech-focused approach. A 14.6 inch touchscreen infotainment system sits at the centre of the cabin, joined by a 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster that adapts to different driving modes and lighting conditions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition are included across the range.

BAIC has also added its Level 2 ADAS driver assistance package, which brings adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection and a 360 degree camera system.
Higher spec models add heated and ventilated leather seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof and a driver seat with three memory settings and Welcome Mode.
Built in South Africa for local conditions
The B30 is assembled at BAIC’s plant in the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Gqeberha, which was developed with the support of the Industrial Development Corporation. The facility is one of the largest automotive investments in the country and plays a key role in BAIC’s local strategy.

Local assembly means shorter waiting times, stronger aftersales support and a growing local supply chain. It also helps expand BAIC’s future export capability into other African markets.
Tested globally, ready for SA
Although the B30 presents a polished and modern design, it carries engineering experience from BAIC’s six decades of off-road development. The company says the SUV has undergone more than four million kilometres of testing across varied climates, from extreme cold to desert heat.
The range-topping B30 Premium Adventure HEV AWD produces 301 kW and 685 Nm from its hybrid powertrain. It uses an All Terrain System with settings for Mud, Sand, Wading and Snow, while its AWD system is designed to react in 0.03 seconds to maintain traction. Ground clearance of 215 mm and approach and departure angles of 25 and 30 degrees give it proper usability on rougher roads.
Powertrains and efficiency
The petrol models use a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine with 138 kW and 305 Nm, paired with a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Hybrid models use BAIC’s Magic Core Hybrid System with six operating modes that balance performance with economy.

Combined output on the top hybrid reaches 301 kW, yet claimed consumption can be as low as 5.85 L per 100 km. BAIC also quotes a potential driving range of up to 1 000 km.
