Over the years, Toyota South Africa has introduced a number of special-edition Hilux models that mark important milestones in the vehicle’s journey. The Legend 35 in 2004 was the first, followed by the Legend 40 in 2010, the Legend 45 in 2014, and the Legend 50 in 2019. Each edition carried the Hilux story forward, combining proven toughness with enhancements that reflected the needs of South African drivers at the time.

Now, Toyota takes the next step with the Hilux Legend 55, and we recently found ourselves in the historic town of Graaff-Reinet, joining Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) for the local launch of the new Hilux special-edition model marking 55 years of Hilux heritage in Mzansi.

    What’s new?

Building on the already well-loved Legend grade, the Legend 55 introduces a range of aesthetic and practical enhancements that set it apart. Highlights include Legend 55 badging on the doors and tailgate, a sports bar, an under-body bash plate, a tow bar, a lockable roller shutter, and a rubberized load bin.

The double-cabs also get puddle lamps that project the Legend 55 logo, dual-tone 18-inch alloy wheels, and a selection of exclusive paint colours such as Dark Green Mica Metallic.

Inside, Toyota has given it a premium touch with black leather seats embroidered with Legend 55 branding, JBL premium audio, tread plates and plaques celebrating 55 years, and brushed scuff plates to complete the look.

    Under the bonnet

Powering the Legend 55 is the tried-and-tested 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine producing 150 kW and 500 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, offered in Xtra Cab or Double Cab body styles.

    Driving impressions

After spending over 500 kilometres behind the wheel, it is easy to understand why the Hilux continues to dominate South African sales charts. Despite being one of the older bakkies in its class, the Hilux Legend 55 still delivers a blend of refinement, reliability and ruggedness that is hard to beat.

The 2.8 GD-6 engine remains strong and responsive, with ample torque for overtaking and towing, while the 6-speed auto is smooth and intuitive. Ride quality has improved noticeably over the years, offering a more composed and comfortable drive whether you are tackling gravel back roads or cruising the highway.

    Pricing

Pricing starts at R728,300 for the Xtra Cab 4×2 and stretches up to R935,900 for the Double Cab 4×4. That is about a R26,500 premium over the standard Legend and Legend RS derivatives.
