The long-awaited sixth generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class recently graced us with its presence. The locally built newcomer is affectionately known as the “baby S-Class” due to the similarities in both design and technology.

    Elegant exterior

Our test unit is the elegant-looking C220d Avant-garde line. Upfront, the posh compact sedan gets a new light design and a large radiator grille with chrome surrounds. It’s sitting on a set of 5-spoke 18-inch light-alloy wheels.

    Luxury Interior
The S-Class inspiration continues in the cabin of the new C-Class. The driver gets a display screen that measures 11.9-inches whilst the infotainment is displayed on a tablet-like 10.25-inch featuring the automaker’s second generation MBUX infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other noticeable interior updates include the flattened round vents and latest generation steering wheel design.

The biggest triumph of the C-Class is definitely the cabin, where opulence and tech are blended well to create a great space to be in. Although the rear feels cramped the massive sunroof makes up for this by the light it creates.

    The drive
Powering the new C220d is a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 147kW and 440Nm. Its 48V electrical system technology adds an additional 15kW and 200Nm to the outputs. All the power is sent to the rear wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

There’s no better place to be in the C-Class than behind the wheel. The 2-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine hauls along without much fanfare and power seems to be on tap. During our stint we managed a return of 4.3l/100km from the claimed 4.6l/100km. This is certainly great news for prospective buyers as fuel prices continue to soar.

    Final thoughts

Overall, the C-Class makes a good case for the dying breed of sedans and if like us you are into them, we recommend that you shortlist the new C-Class. Furthermore competition might be falling behind when comes to the interior. Pricing of the Mercedes-Benz C220d range starts from R908,500.
