    We drive Isuzu’s mu-X 4×4 Onyx

Recently we spent time with the new Isuzu mu-X range-topping Onyx which looks aggressive, sharp and modern thanks to angular LED headlights, an octagonal-shaped grille, sharp body lines on its side profile, newly designed 20-inch alloy wheels and slim LED taillights.

    Interior

The new Isuzu mu-X’s interior design is practical, feels premium and modern thanks to 7-seats, ample storage and knee room space, soft-touch materials, comfy heated faux leather seats and the latest technologies like a large but dim 9-inch touch display infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a decent sounding 8 speaker sound system.

    Safety features

Available for the first time in the range is the brand’s Intelligent Driver Assistance Systems (IDAS) with key safety features like lane-keep, blind spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, steering assist, and front collision warning and mitigation, just to name a few.

    Power

Powering the range is a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine making 140 kW and 450 Nm which has been reworked, and is now noticeably quieter and more responsive to throttle inputs. On-road comfort and off-road comfort is good despite the large SUV riding on overly road-friendly wheels. The 6-speed automatic is smooth and impressive and works accurately to deliver the added power of the new mu-X.

    Pricing

Whilst the price tag of R860,500 for the range-topping mu-X Onyx is a tad steep, you do get a lot of car for your money. Prices for the new Isuzu mu-X range start from R693,800.
