When the first BMW X6 launched back in 2008, it was met with raised eyebrows. “A coupe SUV?!” the world asked. But BMW stuck to their guns, blending the bulk of an SUV with the sleek silhouette of a coupe—and thus, the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) was born. Over the years, the X6 has become a design icon and trendsetter, spawning rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Audi Q8. Fast forward to today, and the X6 is in its third generation, looking sharper and driving better than ever.

What powers it?

Under the hood (or bonnet, since we’re keeping it local), you’ll find a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel paired with a mild-hybrid system. It cranks out 219 kW and 670 Nm, sent to all four wheels via BMW’s slick eight-speed automatic transmission. Despite its size and muscle, BMW claims it’ll sip fuel at 7.8 L/100 km—and during our test, we got it down to 6.1 L/100 km on the open road. In mixed conditions? A still-impressive 7.2 L/100 km. Not bad for a beast with broad shoulders.

What’s new?

Visually, the facelift isn’t radical—it’s more like a fresh haircut before a big event. Slimmer Matrix LED headlights, a sharper front bumper, and redesigned LED taillights at the rear make it look leaner and meaner. The M Sport Package comes standard, so you’re getting all the spicy extras straight out the box. Add trapezoidal exhausts and you’ve got a rear end that demands a second look—whether you’re into cars or not.

Interior

Slide into the cabin and you’re greeted by BMW’s new Curved Display—a blend of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen running iDrive 8.5. It’s sharp, slick, and futuristic… though we’ll admit, learning your way around it takes a bit of practice. Let’s just say there’s a learning curve, quite literally.

The Harman Kardon sound system was an absolute vibe, delivering clean highs and rich bass whether we were stuck in traffic or cruising the coast. Materials? Premium. Comfort? As expected from a luxury SUV priced at R1,888,637—no skimping here.

Final thoughts

The BMW X6 xDrive30d is still the gym-going, tech-savvy showstopper we remember—just with fresher features and a smarter brain. It’s more efficient than you’d expect, powerful without being thirsty, and stylish without trying too hard. If you’re looking for an SUV that blends bold looks, clever tech, and real-world usability, the X6 ticks the right boxes.
