Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) closed off August 2025 with an impressive milestone, securing record year-to-date sales of 13 276 units. This performance boosted the brand’s market share to 25.6 percent, cementing its dominance in the local market.

According to naamsa’s latest report, the automotive industry as a whole has shown strong recovery. New vehicle sales for August grew by 18.7 percent compared to the same month in 2024, with 51 880 units sold in total. Of these, 83.3 percent came through dealer channels, highlighting the strength of South Africa’s dealership networks. Passenger car sales also hit their highest levels since 2015, with 36 914 units sold.

Toyota’s market leaders

Toyota’s passenger car line-up continued to perform well, moving 8 401 units in August. The Corolla Cross was the standout performer, climbing to 2 743 units sold, making it South Africa’s best-selling passenger car. The Starlet followed with 1 322 units, while the Vitz (885), Rumion (772) and Prado (270) also made strong contributions. Lexus, Toyota’s luxury arm, maintained steady sales with more than 80 units, led by the GX SUV with 28 units sold.

In the light commercial vehicle segment, the Hilux once again dominated. With 3 325 units sold in August, it remains South Africa’s top-selling bakkie and holds a 28.4 percent share of its segment. The Hilux’s success was boosted by the recent introduction of the Legend 55 edition. Other strong contributors included the Hiace (577 units), Quantum Van (65), and Land Cruiser 79 Pick-Up (446).

Commercial and fleet sales

In the medium and heavy commercial space, the Quantum Bus registered 102 units, while the Hino 500 and 700 contributed a combined 126 units. Fleet sales also reflected growing confidence, with 2 433 companies choosing Toyota vehicles to support their operations. The Corolla Cross, Rumion and Hilux Single Cab each recorded their best-ever month in fleet sales.

Exports and parts

Toyota also reported a rise in exports, with 4 770 vehicles shipped in August compared to 4 264 the previous month. On the parts side, just under 2 million pieces were supplied to the local market, alongside 364 782 pieces exported internationally.
