Nissan and Chery South Africa have reached an agreement for the acquisition of Nissan’s manufacturing assets in Rosslyn, marking a significant shift for the local automotive industry.

Subject to regulatory approvals and other standard conditions, Chery SA will purchase the land, buildings and associated assets of Nissan’s Rosslyn plant, including a nearby stamping facility. The transaction is expected to be concluded in mid-2026.

As part of the agreement, the majority of Nissan employees currently associated with the Rosslyn operations will be offered employment by Chery SA. These offers will be made on substantially similar terms and conditions to those currently in place.

Nissan Africa President Jordi Vila said the decision follows careful consideration of the long-term viability of the Rosslyn plant within Nissan’s global manufacturing footprint. External factors have affected plant utilisation in recent years, prompting the need to explore alternative solutions that protect jobs and support the broader automotive value chain.

Despite the sale of its manufacturing assets, Nissan has confirmed it will continue operating in South Africa through its sales and distribution business. The brand plans to introduce several new models in the 2026 financial year, including the Nissan Tekton and the Nissan Patrol, and will continue providing sales and aftersales services to local customers.

The agreement ensures the Rosslyn site remains active within South Africa’s automotive sector while allowing both companies to pursue their respective long-term strategies in the market.
