South Africa’s new vehicle market continued its impressive run in June 2026, with domestic sales increasing by 15.3% year-on-year to 54,482 units, according to the latest figures released by naamsa. The result marks the country’s strongest June sales performance since 2007 and highlights the resilience of the local automotive market despite ongoing economic pressures.

Passenger vehicles once again led the way, with sales rising 18.1% to 38,393 units. Light commercial vehicles, including bakkies and minibuses, also enjoyed a strong month, increasing 8.4% to 13,171 units. The medium and heavy commercial vehicle segments posted positive growth as well, suggesting continued demand from businesses operating across the logistics, construction, agriculture, and mining sectors.

Dealer sales remained the largest contributor to the market, accounting for 86.9% of all vehicles sold during the month. The rental industry represented 7.8% of sales, while government and corporate fleet purchases accounted for 2.8% and 2.5% respectively.

While the domestic market continued to perform well, exports remained under pressure. Vehicle exports declined 6.9% year-on-year to 33,879 units, reflecting softer demand in key international markets.

According to naamsa, the strong local performance was supported by replacement demand, fleet renewals, and increased government procurement, helping offset the effects of higher fuel prices, inflation, and weaker consumer confidence.

Looking ahead, the industry body believes the outlook could improve further if inflation continues to ease and fuel prices stabilise. Continued improvements in South Africa’s logistics network and port operations are also expected to support economic activity and create a more favourable environment for new vehicle sales during the second half of 2026.
