Tata Motors has added a new contender to South Africa’s crowded budget SUV segment, launching the Osprey this month at a starting price of R249,900.

The compact crossover is not an all-new design, however. It is a rebadged version of the Tata Nexon, a model that has already sold more than 1.1 million units in India.

Four derivatives are available, with pricing topping out at R329,900 for the range-topping Creative+ PS DCA.

All models are powered by the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 88.2 kW and 170 Nm of torque. Power is sent through either a five-speed manual transmission or, higher up the range, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters and selectable driving modes.

“While the Osprey name may be new to South Africa, the vehicle behind it arrives with a proven pedigree,” said Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa, referring to the Nexon’s sales record in India.

Tata says the new name reflects the vehicle’s dual-purpose nature. It is designed for city commuting while offering enough capability for weekend trips beyond the city, much like the bird from which it takes its name.

Safety features standard across the range

Safety is a key focus, with Tata fitting six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, ISOFIX child-seat anchors and rear parking sensors as standard across the range.

The Nexon on which the Osprey is based holds a five-star Global NCAP safety rating, along with separate five-star ratings for adult and child occupant protection under India’s Bharat NCAP programme.

The entry-level Smart+ MT comes with a seven-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights and 16-inch wheels.

Moving up to the Creative DCA adds a 10.25-inch infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, a 360-degree camera and alloy wheels.

The range-topping Creative+ PS DCA adds a panoramic sunroof, full LED exterior lighting, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

Despite measuring less than four metres in length, which should make it well suited to urban driving and parking, the Osprey offers a 382-litre boot and 208 mm of ground clearance.

Tata is backing the range with a five-year/125,000 km warranty and a three-year/45,000 km service plan. These form part of the TataMove ownership programme, which also includes 24-hour roadside assistance and nationwide service support.
