The cat is out of the bag and the Mission E Concept has become a reality! Porsche, the Stuttgart based automobile manufacture, has revealed its new all-electric sports car, the Taycan. It looks stunning and is quick. According to Porsche, the Taycan is a unique four-door sports saloon that offers their typical performance and connectivity with “everyday usability.” Having promised enthusiast and the market a Porsche for age of electromobility, our initial impressions are that it seems as if Porsche has just done that, and probably more. The first models that will be introduced in the Taycan are the Turbo S and Turbo. Lower models will be revealed later this year with the Taycan Cross Turismo making a debut at the end of 2020.

Performance

The power numbers of the Taycan range make for good reading, the range topping Turbo S will generate up to 560kW (460kW normal) with overboost power in combination with launch control (combined power consumption of 26.9kWh/100km), whilst the Turbo will make up to 500kW (combined power consumption of 26.0kWh/100km). This will see the Taycan Turbo S accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and the Taycan Turbo will complete the same sprint in 3.2 seconds. Fortunately, you will not be suffering from range anxiety in the Taycan with the Turbo S able to go up to 412 kilometres on a single charge and the Turbo able to do 450 kilometres. Both models will have a top speed of 260km/h and are all-wheel drive with two motors fitted in front and rear axle.

Efficiency

The Taycan will be also the first production vehicle with a system of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This will be quite helpful for the drivers while on the road as the battery can be recharged in just over five minutes using direct current (DC) from the high-power charging network. This can generate a range of up to 100 kilometres. The charge time for five to 80 percent SoC (state of charge) can be done in 22,5 minutes and the maximum charging power is 270kW whilst the overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to eleven kW of alternating current (AC) at home.

Exterior and Interior

The Taycan has a good stance with a body line that still looks like a Porsche. It has wide and flat body with contoured wings and a sporty roof that slopes down to the typical Porsche rear. There’s also a glass-effect Porsche logo that is integrated into the light bar at the back. The interior includes a sleek all-digital dashboard and a 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display. Buttons give way for have been greatly reduced for touch screens or voice command. Your Taycan will respond to “Hey Porsche” command.

Local availability is forecasted for late 2019 or early 2020 if all goes according to plan.
