Vehicles in the mini-hatch segment have improved a great deal. They obviously remain small in stature, but quality of materials, overall aesthetics and ride refinement have made strides of improvements.

Value for money

The biggest attraction of cars in this category is the price, value and perceived running costs, like the relatively easy on the pocket fuel consumption. Without breaking a sweat, we managed to average 5.0l/100km over the week we had it. Specification level ensures that you also get good value.

Interior and safety

Starting with the interior. It is a well thought out space with our test unit having black faux leather and a decently laid out cabin and instrument cluster. Electric windows all round, a 6.2-inch Touch Screen that has Apple Car Play and Android Auto, also connectable via bluetooth are part of the package. You also get driver and front passenger airbag, ISOFIX child seat attachment and central locking. Sticking with safety, the Grand i10 has ABS with EBD, side impact protection beams and front and rear crumple zones.

Engine and power

The i10’s 1.2l 4-Cylinder petrol engine did a good job of propelling the car without feeling under powered. It did however feel a tab lacklustre when carrying a full load. It however remains an easy to car to pilot and has great visibility and a comfortable driving position, so new drivers will not feel intimidated.

Final thoughts

Overall, the Grand i10 is an easy car to live and made even easier by its fit for purpose utility value. It might not be the ultimate winner in this category of mini-hatches, but it holds its sweet spot firmly.

The Hyundai Grand i10 is priced at R236,900 and has a 5 Year / 150,000 km warranty and a 1 Year / 15,000 km service plan.
