Hotly anticipated Toyota GR86 lands in Mzansi

In a world where sports car are going digital, Toyota has given the world an “analogue car for the digital age” which is designed for pure driving pleasure.

    Design

In terms of design, the GR86 is lower than its predecessor and 5 mm have been added to the wheelbase. This results in a tauter appearance and lower center of gravity for better driving dynamics. In order to reduce drag, the front bumper has a new textured molding that is both functional and fashionable. It also includes deep air ducts on each side of the bumper, which improve maneuverability. The front ducts and low-set grille work together to create the “functional matrix grille,” which is a defining design element of Toyota’s GR vehicles.

    Inside

Inside, the GR86 operating system ― which includes the horizontally-accented instrument panel and various switches―is optimally located to enable the driver to focus on driving.

Equipped with a BOXER Meter, comprising a 7-inch touchscreen and LCD metres, the car’s opening animation sequence is inspired by the piston movements of the GR86’s horizontally opposed engine, and fosters a sense of excitement even before the drive begins. The metre display embodies the GR86’s sports performance, changing according to which driving mode is engaged.

The GR86 features lightweight front seats which use independent pads used to support the body, and in order to withstand the lateral and longitudinal g-forces generated during aggressive sports driving, they are covered in an extremely grippy material.

    More power

The new engine, according to Toyota, also provides “smooth, stress-free feelings from low to high rpms.” A 6-speed manual transmission or the optional 6-speed automatic transmission both deliver power to the rear wheels.  Toyota claims the GR86 will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, which is 1.1 seconds quicker than the Toyota 86 of the previous generation.

    Safety

In terms of safety, the GR86 comes with Pre-crash system, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic High Beam Assist, and Collision Damage Mitigation Braking.

    Pricing

    Toyota GR86 6MT – R698,100

    Toyota GR86 6AT – R733,700

All GR86 models are sold with a 6-services/90 000 km service plan (intervals set at 15 000 km) and carry a 3-year/100 000km warranty.
