Launched: First drive impressions of Nissan’s new X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail is an important model in the Yokohama-based automaker’s line-up. Launched in 2001 and now in its fourth generation, Nissan has sold over 7.8 million models, and the latest X-Trail boasts a bold new exterior, advanced technologies, and a revamped interior.

    Bold new looks

Our impressions of the looks are that they are quite bold. It’s quite a departure from its predecessor, with only the rear taillight design remaining as a remnant. The range comes standard with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, and a rear spoiler. Wheel sizes vary depending on the derivative: the Visia gets 17-inch wheels, the Acenta gets 18-inch wheels, and the range-topping Acenta Plus gets 19-inch wheels.

    Upmarket interior

The cabin of the new X-Trail is premium and features high-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces. The top-of-the-range Acenta Plus model comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.8-inch heads-up display. Lower grade models are equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen. The inside is a beautiful place to be and is quite practical, with plenty of space to place smaller items, made even better by its party piece of 90-degree rear opening doors for easy entry and exit, especially for putting in baby seats.

    Performance and drive impressions

The model range is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that produces 135 kW and 244 Nm. Nissan claims 7.4 L/100 km for fuel consumption. The X-Trail sends its power to the front wheels (Visia/Acenta) or all wheels (Acenta Plus) via Nissan’s Xtronic CVT. The new X-Trail has possibly the best CVT gearbox we’ve experienced, as the drone from the transmission is minimal and does a good job at simulating a conventional transmission.

    Pricing

    X-Trail 2WD Visia: R649,900

    X-Trail 2WD Acenta: R709,900

    X-Trail 4WD Acenta Plus: R759,900

We enjoyed our short stint in the new Nissan X-Trail and look forward to getting it in our garage for a more comprehensive review.
