Popular Toyota Hilux gets mild-hybrid system

Toyota is no stranger to hybridisation. In fact, we believe the automaker has one of the best hybridised engines in the world. The popular Hilux is the brand’s latest model to receive mild-hybrid treatment. The hybrid system has been bolted onto the tried and tested 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine resulting in improved power and torque, and most importantly improved fuel consumption and fuel range.

    Hybridised turbodiesel engine

As mentioned above, the Hilux Hybrid is powered by a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine developing 150kW and 500Nm. The 48V mild-hybrid system adds 12kW and 65Nm resulting in a total system output of 162kW and 565Nm. It also adds 7.6 kg to its overall weight and Toyota claims the mild-hybrid system improves the Hilux’s fuel consumption by 5%.

Toyota also claims the hybrid system improves throttle response. In terms of off-roading capabilities, the Hilux Hybrid 48V has approach and departure angles of 29 degrees and 26 degrees respectively, while ground clearance for the hybridised Hilux is 310 mm. Like the non-hybrid Hilux, the Hilux Hybrid has a 3 500 kg towing capacity.

Toyota has left the exterior design and styling as is. Apart from a new Drive Mode button and a Mode Select rotary dial on the centre console as well as model-specific menus on the cluster and infotainment system, much of the interior remains the same.

    Pricing and availability

According to Toyota South Africa’s website, pricing for the Hilux Hybrid 48V range is as follows:
