    By Malusi Msomi

Expanding on the recent redesign of this iconic SUV, Lexus South Africa has added the RX 450h+ plug-in variant which will sit alongside its conventional hybrid counterpart, the RX 500h F Sport. The RX 450h+ will see it sit above the RX 350h, also a hybrid, and the turbocharged, petrol-powered RX 350 and RX 350 F Sport twins.

    New RX design

The exterior design of the new Lexus RX 450h+ embraces the ‘Next Chapter’ design philosophy, featuring updated headlights, a distinctive spindle grille, and a wide rear taillight spanning the car’s width. It also comes standard with 21-inch wheels.

    Premium interior

Inside the cabin, the ‘Tazuna’ cockpit has been meticulously designed to minimize distractions while offering practical features. A 14-inch touch display, customizable ambient lighting, premium sound systems, and a lowered loading height are just a few of the thoughtful additions. Premium materials adorn the interior, creating an inviting space. A panoramic sunroof comes standard, as well as a Mark Levinson sound system.

    Efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain

Powered by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery powering dual electric motors paired with a 2.5-litre inline 4-cylinder engine and an e-CVT transmission, the RX 450h+ has a combined system output of 227kW. Working on the premise of 75 to 80% of your driving being conducted in electric mode, Lexus claims a low fuel consumption figure of 1,3 L/100 which Lexus SA goes on to say that it’s entirely achievable in the combined cycle. The RX 450h+ has some get-up-and-go – it dishes up a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 6.5 seconds. The RX 450h+ has an estimated 66,5 km driving range rating on electric power only.

    Safety

In terms of safety, it gets an upgrade in the third-generation Lexus Safety System+, featuring improved accident detection, motorcycle recognition, and adaptive cruise control. Higher-tier models add Lane Change Assistance and Front Cross-Traffic Alert, while a new Pre-Collision System with Active Steering Assist enhances safety.

    Pricing

    Lexus RX 450h+ – R1,629,300

Pricing includes a 7-years/105 000km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan. Additionally it also comes with an 8-years/195 000 km hybrid battery warranty.
