Cape Town played host to the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, and we were eager to experience its charm first-hand.

    Exterior design

Let’s get one thing out the way, the GLC coupe is a looker. Exterior highlights on the new Coupe SUV include Avantgarde styling with slimmer headlights and a more streamlined grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a standard chrome package. We have to say, BMW invented the coupe SUV concept, but props to Mercedes-Benz for perfecting it.

    The cabin

Stepping inside, the GLC Coupe greets you with a modern and beautiful cabin. A 12.3-inch LCD screen commands attention as the driver display, complemented by an 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system. The cabin is reminiscent of the new-generation C-Class, which is not a bad thing at all. The cabin feels and looks premium, showcasing Mercedes’ use of quality materials throughout. While its coupe silhouette turns heads, the compact rear window limits rear visibility slightly.

    Power and performance

Both models are propelled by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines (GLC 220d with 145 kW/440 Nm, and the GLC 300d with 198 kW/550 Nm), and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds 17 kW and 200 Nm. Both models come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission and Merc’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

    Driving Impressions

The GLC 300d Coupe has a spirited and sporty demeanor, while also possessing a comfortable ride. We spent quite some time on the highway and we couldn’t help but notice how economical the GLC 300d was. We managed to hang around 6.1 L/100km, which is not too bad considering that Mercedes claims 5.5 L/100km.

Despite its slightly lower output in power compared to the GLC 300d, the GLC 220d delivers a refined and efficient ride.

    Verdict

The GLC Coupe combines style, performance, and comfort which makes it quite a compelling offering in its segment. For a more comprehensive review, we have to wait t get it on test.
