In a crowded world of SUVs, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLB 220d carves out a unique space by combining practicality, premium feel, and a dash of ruggedness. Jumping into the GLB 220d from a smaller crossover felt like moving into a luxury apartment—more room, more refinement, and a commanding presence on the road.

The GLB 220d features a 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine that produces 140kW and 400Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power delivery is smooth and effortless, with the diesel engine offering a satisfying surge of torque at low revs. Whether navigating city streets or overtaking on highways, the GLB feels composed and responsive. Fuel consumption is impressive for an SUV of this size; we averaged 6.3L/100km on mixed driving cycles, making it an economical option for long-distance travellers.

When it comes to handling, the GLB strikes a fine balance between comfort and agility. The suspension is tuned to soak up bumps, ensuring a comfortable ride, yet the body remains composed around corners. While it doesn’t quite deliver the sportiness of the GLC, the steering is precise and nicely weighted, making the GLB feel nimble despite its size.

Inside, the GLB 220d is a masterclass in Mercedes’ modern interior design philosophy. The dual 10.25-inch digital screens for the driver display and infotainment dominate the dashboard, offering crisp graphics and intuitive controls. The cabin materials are top-notch, with soft-touch surfaces, brushed aluminium accents, and ambient lighting that sets the perfect mood. Seats are upholstered in leatherette or optional leather, with heated and ventilated options for added comfort.

Technology is well-covered, with Mercedes’ MBUX system providing features like voice recognition, navigation, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration. The wireless charging pad is thoughtfully placed, but we missed the optional sound system (Burmester surround system) that ensures an immersive audio experience.

Safety, on top of its practicality is where the GLB truly excels. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Optional packages add extras like a 360-degree camera, parking assist, and Mercedes’ semi-autonomous driving mode, ensuring peace of mind on every journey.

With seating for up to seven (thanks to an optional third row), the GLB is practical without feeling like a full-blown family hauler. Its boxy design translates to excellent headroom and cargo space, with a flexible seating configuration for added versatility.

Priced from R1,189,000, the Mercedes-Benz GLB 220d is priced for entry level premium but it delivers strong value with its 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan and 2-year/unlimited km warranty. If you’re looking for a compact luxury SUV that combines premium comfort, diesel efficiency, and a touch of adventure, the GLB 220d is an easy choice for 2024.
