Driven: We get behind the wheel of Audi’s sledgehammer RS 7 Performance

It is well documented that EV’s are taking over and more so hybrids. This obviously spells a sad end to performance cars and mostly the soundtrack that they offer. Most of us enthusiasts will admit that the EV’s have a great take off and power is available without any turbo lag. However, what makes a performance car is not just the robot to robot but the sound that is heard while doing sprinted runs. Fortunately, some of the newer models have a mild hybrid battery that helps with acceleration and emissions, and most importantly keep the soul-soothing, glorious soundtrack. This was apparent during our time with the Audi RS7 Performance.

    Looks

The model is not new but a mid-life update to the already great engine. Our tester sported an Ascari Blue matte paint, it also wears new and rather massive 22-inch matte titanium grey wheels. The paint finish is not for everyone, but it ensures that it is always the center of attention.

    Interior

Inside, the RS 7 Performance features a blue theme on the steering wheel, seats, dashboard, and ‘RS’ logos on the seat-backs. It also has less insulation between the engine compartment, the interior, and the rear of the vehicle, offering what Audi calls “a next-level sound experience”.

The cabin remains premium, and it is not only about being a performance fastback, but it is also about being practical. There’s sufficient head and legroom and the boot offers 535- litres of space, which is slightly less than its younger sibling, the RS 6 Avant.

    Drive and Performance

The RS 7 Performance is still powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. However, power and torque have been uprated from 441kW and 800Nm to 463 kW and 850 Nm. All of its fire-power is of course channeled to all four wheels via an 8-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. Audi claims its fastback sledgehammer will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and it will run out of steam at 305 km/h.

The RS 7 Performance impresses with its mind-bending pace and soul-stirring V8 growl which might get you into trouble with your neighbours if you have to leave for work very early in the morning. Despite riding on massive low-profile wheel, the ride quality and handling are impressive, thanks to the RS sport suspension.

Overall, the RS7 Sportback Performance blends luxury and performance without much fanfare. Pricing starts at R2,482,900.
