Cape Town’s sun-drenched coastline provided the perfect backdrop for the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet. Combining elegance with open-air driving pleasure, the CLE Cabriolet arrives as a stylish successor to the C-Class and E-Class convertibles, blending the best of both into a sleek new package.

    Design and features

The CLE Cabriolet comes standard with the AMG Line package, giving it a sportier stance with aggressive styling cues. The fabric acoustic soft top, available in three colors, opens or closes in just 20 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/h. Standard features like Mercedes’ Aircap wind deflector and Airscarf neck-level heating system ensure comfort even when driving with the roof down.

Inside, the CLE Cabriolet exudes sophistication with a driver-focused cockpit. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster pairs seamlessly with a tilt-adjustable 11.9-inch central display, running the latest MBUX infotainment system. Customizable ambient lighting enhances the atmosphere, while an optional Burmester 3D surround sound system caters to audiophiles. Practicality isn’t forgotten either, with a respectable 385-litre boot (reduced to 295 litres with the top down) and 60:40 split rear seats for added flexibility.

    Performance and driving impressions

The CLE Cabriolet is available in two engine variants:

    CLE 200 – 2.0-litre turbo petrol (150 kW/320 Nm)

    CLE 300 4Matic – 2.0-litre turbo petrol with all-wheel drive (190 kW/400 Nm)

Both models feature mild-hybrid technology, adding an extra 17 kW and 205 Nm in short bursts for effortless overtaking.

We spent quite some time behind the wheel of the CLE 200, and despite being the entry-level option, it delivered a smooth and refined driving experience. The power delivery is linear, and the mild-hybrid system fills in any gaps, making acceleration feel seamless. The 9-speed automatic transmission is well-calibrated, ensuring a balance between relaxed cruising and responsive performance when needed.

The CLE’s ride is composed, with adaptive dampers offering a good mix of comfort and agility. With the roof down, the cabin remains impressively quiet, thanks to the acoustic soft top and the Aircap system reducing wind turbulence. Steering is precise, making the Cabriolet feel agile on winding coastal roads.

    Pricing

    CLE 200 – R1,515,350

    CLE 300 4Matic – R1,573,651

While it offers a compelling package, the pricing puts it in competition with the likes of the BMW 4 Series Convertible — which offers similar levels of luxury and performance.

    Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet successfully blends style, comfort, and technology, making it an appealing choice for those who want a luxurious drop-top experience. While the price is on the premium side, it delivers a refined driving experience and a beautifully crafted interior. For those who appreciate open-air cruising with the latest tech and comfort features, the CLE Cabriolet is a standout option in the segment.
