Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition Plus – A bold hybrid SUV

Volvo’s XC60 has always been the understated contender in the mid-size luxury SUV segment, but with the Black Edition, it’s shedding the quiet image and going full stealth mode. Draped entirely in black—from the wheels and trim to the badging—this XC60 makes a bold first impression, without screaming for attention.

    Design & Interior

Step inside and the theme continues. The black-on-black interior is tastefully broken up with subtle silver trim, giving the cabin a modern and premium feel. True to Volvo form, there’s a sense of calm Scandinavian elegance, with thoughtful material choices and a clean layout. Standard kit includes a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging pad, and a 9-inch touchscreen running Google apps and services.

Boot space comes in at 468 litres, which is decent for the segment and more than enough for daily errands or a family weekend away.

    Performance & powertrain

Under the skin, the XC60 Recharge T8 Black Edition is anything but subtle. It’s powered by a clever combo: a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L petrol engine (233kW/400Nm) paired with a rear-mounted electric motor (107kW/309Nm), bringing total system output to a meaty 340kW and 709Nm. That’s enough to rocket this SUV from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

Volvo claims a combined fuel consumption of 1.6L/100km—a figure you’ll only get with frequent charging. But when the battery is full, the plug-in hybrid system shines. It’s smooth, powerful, and well-mannered in everyday driving. Is it the answer to carbon neutrality? It’s certainly a strong step in the right direction.

    Tech & features

The Google-powered infotainment system is helpful, especially with Google Assistant on hand to navigate, control media, or check the weather. That said, the overall system is starting to show its age—especially compared to newer rivals. Still, the interface is clean and easy to use, and connectivity is solid.

    Verdict

At a starting price of R1,364,000, the Volvo XC60 Recharge Black Edition isn’t cheap, but it offers a compelling mix of performance, luxury, and green credentials. For an SUV that’s now over eight years into its life cycle, Volvo has done a great job keeping it feeling fresh and relevant—especially in this murdered-out spec.
