We recently headed down to Gqeberha for the much-anticipated local launch of the all-new Lexus GX, a bold, boxy SUV that Lexus is confidently pitching at serious 4×4 enthusiasts. The new GX blends rugged capability with Lexus’ signature refinement, offering two distinct flavours: the off-road-ready Overtrail and the more road-focused, luxury-laden SE.
Rugged meets refined design
Visually, the new GX is impossible to miss. With its squared-off profile, prominent grille, and sharp LED headlights, it’s a modern take on classic 4×4 cues. The Overtrail rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, reinforcing its off-road credentials, while the SE goes all-in on elegance with massive 22-inch wheels and retractable side steps.

We particularly appreciated the Overtrail’s aggressive stance and purposeful detailing—it’s unmistakably a serious off-roader. The SE, on the other hand, leans into a more understated, urban-chic design, making it ideal for buyers who prefer their luxury with less dust.
Interior
Step inside either model and you’re greeted by the kind of luxury Lexus is known for. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 14-inch infotainment touchscreen, head-up display, and wireless charging pad are standard across the range.
Where Lexus truly shines is in material quality and ergonomics. Bucking the trend toward minimalism, the GX retains physical buttons and dials, especially for off-road functions—a thoughtful touch that makes operation easier in real-world conditions.

In the SE, luxury is turned up to eleven with a 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, semi-aniline leather upholstery, massage front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. It also adds a third row of seats, expanding practicality for larger families.
Performance and driving impressions
Under the bonnet of both models is a powerful 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 that puts out 260 kW and 650 Nm. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD, the GX is more than capable of handling a wide variety of terrains. Lexus claims an average fuel consumption of 12.3 L/100 km.

We spent some time behind the wheel of the Overtrail, and it’s every bit the off-road warrior Lexus claims. With torque coming in strong from just 2,000 rpm, the GX feels effortlessly powerful on both highway and trail. It handled a short off-road course with confidence, aided by its adaptive damping system, which smooths out rough terrain without compromising comfort.
Switching to the SE, the ride becomes noticeably softer—ideal for daily driving or long-distance cruising. However, on loose gravel, those large 22-inch wheels did slightly impact comfort and road feel.
