    Driven: We drive Isuzu’s stylish D-Max X-Rider

The Isuzu D-Max is one of the standout favourites in the lifestyle bakkie segment. Recognizing this, Isuzu continually seeks new ways to offer variety and keep their customers satisfied. This brings us to this, the Isuzu D-Max X-Rider. In 2016, Isuzu South Africa launched the X-Rider variant for their popular double-cab D-Max bakkie as a limited-edition, special-value model. Its popularity led to its inclusion in the standard D-Max line-up just a year later.

    Styling

Based on the LS, it borrows some features from the LSE but in a more stylish package. The exterior features a sleek black gloss grille with bold red ‘ISUZU’ lettering prominently displayed at the front. Stylish black accents adorn the door handles, B-pillars, side mirror covers, and tailgate handle. It also boasts LED lights (which not only look great, but also work great) and 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Undeniably, it stands out as one of the most attractive bakkies on the road today. The combination of black accents with the Splash White paint is our top choice.

    Interior

The interior of the X-Rider is a visual treat with bold red accents on the door materials, stitching, and leather seats, all proudly displaying the distinctive ‘X’ logos. Standard features in the X-Rider include a seven-inch infotainment screen, cruise control for those long trips and essential features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear park assist, and a rear-view camera. While there’s a noticeable use of plastic in the cabin, it doesn’t detract from the overall appeal and functionality.

    Power

Under the hood, the X-Rider boasts a 1.9-liter diesel engine producing 110 kW and 350 Nm of torque. Isuzu claims fuel consumption of 5.6 L/100 km. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. During our stint, we covered more than 1800 km in a short period (including a trip from Johannesburg to Durban and back). The X-Rider’s 1.9 Ddi engine proved to be quite economical, averaging 8.7 L/100 km. While some may find it lacking in power, this is balanced by its great fuel economy. We do hope Isuzu South Africa sneaks in their mighty 3.0-liter diesel motor in this bad boy. The X-Rider handles comfortably on most road surfaces, and the high seating position offers great visibility.

    Safety

When it comes to safety, the X-Rider comes with driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag. Active safety features available to the driver include ABS brakes, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Trailer Sway Control.

    Verdict

The D-Max X-Rider is quite a well-rounded package. Not only does it look great, but it is also practical and economical. With the backing of its tried and tested reliability, the X-Rider makes for a compelling buy. The Isuzu D-Max X-Rider is priced at R750,200.
