Launch Drive | Award-winning new Hyundai Santa Fe is hard to fault

We recently attended the launch of Hyundai’s all-new fifth-generation Santa Fe Elite AWD. The newcomer introduces a bold and distinctive design, a refined and versatile three-row interior, a host of advanced technologies, enhanced safety features and a hybrid powertrain.

    Polarizing exterior design

Design and styling will always be a subjective matter. That said, we think we the new Santa Fe Elite’s design is polarizing to say the least. Exterior highlights include a bold, boxy design, distinctive H-shaped LED head- and taillights, flared wheel arches, 20-inch alloy wheels, contrasting front and rear bumpers, functional roof rails, and a choice of five body colours.

    Airbus Santa Fe

Hopping inside the new seven-seater Santa Fe, we were greeted by an impressive cabin which is modern, premium, spacious and practical. Standout features include three-row seating, H-Tex synthetic leather seats (heated and ventilated in the front), dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging pads, a premium Bose sound system, a panoramic sunroof, 628 litres of luggage space (with all seats up), and multiple storage compartments.

    Powertrain and driving impressions

Performance comes from a hybridised 1.6L turbo-petrol engine producing 175 kW and 367 Nm. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission, with a claimed fuel consumption of 7.5 L/100 km.

After spending the day with the new Hyundai Santa Fe, we were very impressed with the newcomer. Our highlights include a comfortable ride quality, impressive insulation, a hybrid/petrol concoction with ample power and torque, impressive fuel range and a smooth shifting gearbox. We look forward to having the Santa Fe on test for a more detailed review.

    Pricing and warranty

Santa Fe Elite AWD Hybrid – R1,249,900

The new Santa Fe comes with Hyundai’s 7-year/200,000 km warranty.  This includes coverage for the engine, transmission and other key drivetrain components.  Furthermore, the hybrid battery pack is covered by a separate 8-year/160 000 km warranty.
