Chery Tiggo Cross Elite Hybrid: Style meets efficiency

Chery’s recently launched Tiggo Cross Hybrid has just landed on our driveway, and over the past few days we’ve had the chance to get to know this new fuel-sipping derivative. Designed to offer the same style and practicality as its petrol-powered siblings but with much better efficiency, the Tiggo Cross Hybrid is one of the brand’s first steps into electrified mobility in South Africa.

    Powertrain and efficiency

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with hybrid components, delivering a combined output of 150 kW and 310 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via Chery’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. The brand claims an impressive fuel consumption figure of 5.4 L per 100 km, aided by a 1.83 kWh battery pack and a 51 litre fuel tank which together promise a theoretical range of up to 1,000 km on a full tank.

    Design and interior

Visually, the Tiggo Cross Hybrid stands out with model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels and a Hybrid badge on the tailgate. The interior remains largely unchanged, retaining the premium look and feel that Chery’s latest models have become known for. Soft touch materials, a modern infotainment system and an upmarket overall layout continue to impress.

    Driving impressions

The Tiggo Cross Hybrid feels refined and confident on the road, though it does come with a few compromises. The transmission tends to produce a droning sound under acceleration, which can make the cabin noisier during spirited driving. The hybrid setup also makes the car feel less responsive compared to the non-hybrid models equipped with the conventional 6 speed automatic transmission.

For everyday driving and commuting, the Tiggo Cross Hybrid is smooth, quiet at steady speeds and impressively efficient, which makes it ideal for urban and suburban use. In our real-world testing, fuel consumption hovered between 4.7 and 5.1 L/100 km, which is commendably close to the claimed figure. Our estimated range was around 800 km, still a great result considering mixed driving conditions.

    Pricing and verdict

At R469,900, the Chery Tiggo Cross Elite Hybrid represents solid value in the compact SUV segment. It combines head-turning looks, good build quality and excellent efficiency, making it a strong option for buyers looking to cut fuel costs without sacrificing comfort or tech.

While it is not the most engaging Chery to drive, its fuel economy and practicality make it one of the brand’s most compelling everyday choices so far.
