Why the BYD Sealion 7 Premium deserves more attention

BYD has quietly been building a strong reputation in South Africa. Their cars are solid, well-engineered and often exceed expectations, yet their marketing doesn’t always reflect just how good their products really are. The Sealion 7 Premium is the perfect example. It’s one of the most well put together cars we’ve driven this year, and it deserves far more noise around it than it currently gets.

    Exterior styling

From the outside, the Sealion 7 immediately turns heads. The coupe-like roofline gives it a sleek and athletic profile without compromising too much on practicality. The front and rear lighting elements add a modern touch, and the overall design sits comfortably among the more premium EVs on the market. It has presence without shouting for attention.

    Interior and comfort

Step inside and BYD’s attention to detail becomes clear. The cabin feels properly premium, with high-quality materials, solid build quality and an overall sense of refinement that some established brands still struggle to achieve. The buttons are easy to reach, the seats are supportive and the layout is intuitive.

Space is another win for the Sealion 7. Rear passengers get generous headroom and legroom, so even taller occupants won’t have to fold themselves into uncomfortable shapes. It is genuinely family-friendly without feeling like a bulky SUV.

    Driving experience

On the road, the Sealion 7 is smooth, composed and easy to live with. The suspension filters out rough surfaces well, and the car remains settled at higher speeds. Power delivery is predictable and linear, making it a confident daily driver regardless of road conditions.

This is also one of the few EVs where the real-world efficiency is better than the claimed figure. BYD says the Sealion 7 uses 19.8 kWh/100km, but we managed an excellent 16.5 kWh/100km with normal driving. That makes the quoted 482 km range very achievable, and range anxiety essentially becomes a non-issue.

    Verdict

The BYD Sealion 7 Premium is a reminder that BYD knows how to build a top-tier vehicle. It is well-engineered, premium inside, easy to drive and impressively efficient. The only thing holding it back is the fact that many South Africans still don’t know just how good BYD’s cars have become. With marketing that matches the product, this could easily be one of the standout EVs in its price range.

Is it worth R1,099,900? If you want a stylish, spacious and genuinely premium EV with real-world range that delivers on its promises, the answer leans strongly towards yes.
