New GWM ORA 5 arrives in South Africa with petrol, hybrid and EV power

GWM South Africa has officially launched the new ORA 5, introducing a compact SUV that will be offered with three different powertrains from day one. Buyers will be able to choose between a turbo-petrol, hybrid or fully electric model, making the ORA 5 one of the few vehicles in its segment to offer such a broad range of options.

Built on GWM’s ONE platform, the ORA 5 has been designed to accommodate multiple powertrains without compromising on space, practicality or refinement.

    Design and dimensions

The ORA 5 carries over the rounded styling cues that have become synonymous with the ORA brand, but packages them in a compact SUV body.

Measuring 4,471mm in length with a 2,720mm wheelbase, the newcomer promises generous interior space while remaining well suited to everyday city driving. Standard exterior features include LED headlights, roof rails and welcome lighting, while higher-specification models add a panoramic glass roof.

    Interior and technology

Inside, the cabin adopts a clean, minimalist layout centred around GWM’s latest Coffee OS infotainment system.

The dual-screen setup supports smartphone connectivity and voice control, while the interior makes use of soft-touch materials throughout. Depending on the model, buyers can also expect features such as wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof and a range of comfort-focused equipment.

Safety has also received plenty of attention. Every ORA 5 comes standard with six airbags and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems designed to improve occupant protection and driver confidence.

    Three powertrains to choose from

Perhaps the ORA 5’s biggest talking point is the variety of powertrains on offer.

    The entry-level petrol models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 105kW and 210Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Stepping up to the hybrid introduces a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine working alongside an electric motor. Combined outputs stand at 164kW and 476Nm, with power delivered through GWM’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which automatically switches between electric, hybrid and petrol drive depending on driving conditions.

For buyers looking to go fully electric, the ORA 5 BEV features a front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW and 260Nm. Power comes from a 58.3kWh battery, with GWM claiming a NEDC driving range of up to 520km on a full charge.
