The Volkswagen Caravelle is entering a new chapter. With the launch of the Caravelle eHybrid in South Africa, the German automaker is betting on plug-in hybrid technology as a practical stepping stone to electrified mobility, offering drivers the efficiency of electric power and the reassurance of a petrol engine in one package.
The new Caravelle eHybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor, producing a combined 180kW and 350Nm of torque. It is also the most powerful production Caravelle ever offered in South Africa.

Volkswagen says the plug-in hybrid system allows drivers to travel up to 95km on electric power alone, making it suitable for daily commuting without using fuel. For longer trips, the petrol engine works together with the electric motor to provide a combined driving range of up to 700km.
The Caravelle eHybrid uses Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, with an electric motor driving the rear axle. This setup improves traction and stability, particularly on wet or slippery roads, while allowing the system to send power where it is needed most.
Charging is designed to be convenient for owners. The vehicle comes with a 7.4kW AC Wallbox home charger, with a full charge taking around five and a half hours. It also supports 11kW AC charging and 40kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in about 26 minutes under ideal conditions.

Volkswagen says the Caravelle eHybrid has been developed as a practical step towards electrified mobility, giving customers the benefits of electric driving without the range anxiety often associated with fully electric vehicles.
The premium people mover comes standard with a wide range of comfort and safety features, including three-zone climate control, a Harman Kardon sound system, IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, power-operated sliding doors, a power tailgate, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The new Volkswagen Caravelle eHybrid is priced at R1,794,000.
The price includes VAT and emissions tax. Volkswagen also includes a three-year/120,000km manufacturer warranty, a five-year/100,000km Easy Drive maintenance plan, a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, and an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty.
