Recently we spent time with the new Toyota Rumion which is a product of the Suzuki-Toyota alliance, and is based on the Ertiga. The 7-seater MPV replaces the Avanza. Not only is it cheaper (undercutting the starting price of the Avanza by R20,000 at R245,600), it seems like an improvement in nearly every department.

    Exterior and interior

Looks are less polarising than the Avanza and the interior gains more space. Driver conveniences, in the range-topping 1.5 TX, priced from R301,600, like a touchscreen audio system (with six speakers, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and a reverse camera), automatic air conditioning, an additional rear power socket, keyless entry with push start, and 15-inch alloy wheels, make this a compelling choice for large families on a budget.

    Power and drive

Power comes from a 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine with 77kW and 138Nm that is paired with a 5-speed manual speed transmission or a 4-speed auto. We drove the former and the gear shifts were seamless. Comfort was also decent for the segment. Power felt adequate when taking things slow but with more passengers and a bit of purpose in our driving, the Rumion felt somewhat strained. Not a deal breaker considering the overall package and price point.

    Pricing and warranty

Here’s the pricing for the Toyota Rumion:
    – Rumion 1.5 S – R245,600
    – Rumion 1.5 SX MT – R273,500
    – Rumion 1.5 SX AT – R289,200
    – Rumion 1.5 TX MT – R301,600
    – Rumion 1.5 TX AT – R317,200

A four-services/60 000 km service plan is standard on all Rumion models. A 3-year/100 000 km warranty also forms part of the offering.
