Back in 2014 Audi Sport were given the task to spruce up the Q3 with an RS design and numerous other bits and bobs sourced from other Audi Sport models to make the RS Q3 a high-performance compact SUV. Throughout the nameplates lifetime and almost a decade later, Audi introduced the Sportback derivative and we recently got well-acquainted with the second-generation as we had missed the experience of its predecessor. The competition is fearsome and is not the same as when the RSQ3 was initially introduced.

RS-specific exterior design
Our test RS Q3 Sportback was coated with a shouty Kyalami Green body paint. Other standout exterior features include a RS-specific garb like the patterned gloss black single-frame radiator grille and a lower front bumper with large air inlets. The rear spots Audi Sport’s signature oval exhaust tips which house the standard dual-branch RS sports exhaust system and black RS badging.

RS-specific interior design and technology
Inside, the RS theme is continued with driver-focused cabin which features a multi-functional flat-bottom steering wheel with steering mounted paddle shifts and RS badging. Another noteworthy feature is the excellent Bang and Olufsen premium sound system with 3D sound. The cabin is a great space to be in, whilst RS badged sports are added for sportiness. The latter are not only good-looking but they’re quite comfortable for daily usage too. The dash design with carbon fibre trims and quality are also impressive. Second-row headroom and legroom is decent as well.
The 530-litre of boot space offer smaller family’s sufficient space for trips. It’s also handy for a couple looking for a practical performance car as well.
Performance and drive
Powering the RS compact SUV is a 2.5-litre TFSI 5-cylinder engine sourced from the RS3. It develops 294 kW and 480 Nm. The permanent Quattro AWD system and 7-speed S tronic helps propel it from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. When you want to let your hair down the RS Q3 Sportback is satisfyingly quick and holds its own in challenging twisty roads. The performance SUV is also pleasing to drive daily.
Final word
All-in-all, the RS Q3 is not just a quick in straight lines but offers performance above that and rewards with practicality as well. It is priced from R1,169,400 and includes a five-year or 100 000km Audi Freeway Plan.
