Mercedes-Benz CLE & E-Class road trip review: Johannesburg to Durban

Our journey kicked off at Mercedes-Benz Bedfordview, where we got behind the wheel of two standout models—the new Mercedes-Benz CLE and the refreshed E-Class. From the urban landscapes of Johannesburg to the coastal roads leading to Durban, these cars were put through their paces, showcasing luxury, performance, and the latest in automotive technology.

    The Mercedes-Benz CLE

The CLE Coupé is a striking blend of the C-Class and E-Class coupes that it succeeds. Its design is bold and unmistakably Mercedes, embodying the brand’s “Sensual Purity” philosophy. From the aggressive front, with a low-slung bonnet and LED headlights, to the sculpted rear with its smooth lines, it strikes a great balance between sportiness and elegance. The subtle power domes on the hood add a nice performance touch too.

Inside, the CLE has a familiar yet premium feel. The cabin combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with an 11.9-inch central display, with the latter powered by Mercedes’ latest MBUX system. With 64-color ambient lighting and an optional Burmester 3D surround sound system, the interior is both tech-filled and comfortable.

Under the hood, the CLE 300 gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 190 kW and 400 Nm, aided by mild-hybrid tech. It offers solid performance whether you’re cruising around town or pushing it on open roads. Overall, it delivers a smooth and comfortable ride, even with its larger 19-inch wheels.

    The Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz has sold over 16 million units since 1946, and this new version reflects that experience, now featuring even more advanced tech while keeping its luxury heritage intact.

From the outside, the E-Class carries that classic saloon design with a sleek “cab-backward” profile. The front end looks fresh, with a black panel connecting the grille to the headlights, and the rear lights sport a star motif that stands out, especially at night. It’s also equipped with an optional DIGITAL LIGHT system, improving both style and visibility on the road.

Step inside, and the E-Class’s tech-forward interior becomes evident. The MBUX Superscreen dominates the dashboard, creating a seamless digital experience. There’s also an optional Burmester 4D surround sound system that turns music into a multi-sensory experience using lighting and sound vibrations, which is quite the party trick for passengers.

We tested the E220d variant, which comes with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that puts out 145 kW and 450 Nm. The mild-hybrid system helps balance performance with fuel efficiency, making it a great option for longer drives. We found the E220d particularly impressive through Golden Gate National Park, where its handling felt both responsive and smooth.

    Final thoughts

Whether you lean towards the sportier CLE or prefer the refined luxury of the E-Class, both models offer impressive packages of design, technology, and performance. A more in-depth review will be conducted once we get both models on test.
