Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance Review: The compact EV with serious punch

Volvo’s commitment to electrification takes a bold leap with the EX30 Twin Motor Performance, a compact SUV designed to blend Scandinavian simplicity with cutting-edge EV technology. As the smallest and most affordable model in Volvo’s electric line-up, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance aims to redefine what we expect from compact EVs, delivering impressive performance, a refined cabin, and eco-conscious design—all at a competitive price point.

The EX30 packs a punch with its dual electric motors, producing a combined 315kW and 543Nm of torque in Twin Motor Performance guise. This power propels the compact SUV from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 3.6 seconds, making it one of the quickest in its class while worrying some sports cars. The 69kWh battery provides a WLTP-rated range of up to 460km, and during our test, we found the real-world range to hover comfortably around 400km with mixed driving. Charging is convenient, too—fast-charging capabilities allow the EX30 to replenish from 10% to 80% in just under 30 minutes when connected to a 150kW DC charger.

On the road, the EX30 impresses with its sharp handling and composed ride. The low centre of gravity, courtesy of the underfloor battery, enhances stability in corners, while the suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and responsiveness. The EX30 is equally at home navigating city streets as it is on the highway, where it delivers a quiet, refined drive.

Inside, Volvo’s signature minimalist design shines through. The cabin features sustainable materials such as recycled textiles and natural fibres, underscoring the brand’s eco-conscious ethos. The centrepiece of the interior is a 12.3-inch vertically oriented touchscreen running the latest Google-powered infotainment system. Seamless integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with features like built-in Google Maps and voice assistant, makes for a tech-savvy experience.

Passenger comfort is a priority, with supportive seats and ample space for a vehicle of its size. Rear passengers enjoy adequate legroom, although taller occupants may find headroom slightly restricted due to the coupe-like roofline. The boot offers 318 litres of cargo space, expandable to 904 litres with the rear seats folded—a practical touch for a compact SUV.

Volvo hasn’t skimped on safety, either. The EX30 is equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alert. Unique to the EX30 is a feature called “Driver Understanding,” which uses sensors to monitor the driver’s alertness and provide warnings if signs of drowsiness or distraction are detected.

Priced at R1,114,000, the EX30 Twin Motor offers exceptional value in the premium compact EV segment. Volvo offers the EX30 with an 8-year/160,000km battery warranty, along with a 5-year/100,000km general warranty and a service plan, with intervals every 15,000km.

For those seeking an environmentally friendly (Think one screen upfront, One massive sound bar, single unit window controls) SUV that doesn’t compromise on performance, style, or technology, the Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance is an outstanding choice. Compact, yet packed with features and brimming with Volvo’s renowned safety and design ethos, it sets a new benchmark in the growing electric SUV market. Easily the best EV we have tested.
