Tata Motors has re-entered the South African passenger vehicle market, introducing four new models aimed at local buyers. The official launch took place at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg, where the Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago were unveiled.

The relaunch comes through a partnership with Motus Holdings, which will handle sales and aftersales support across the country. Tata has expanded significantly in recent years, growing from 170,000 units in 2020 to over 560,000 units in 2024.

Safety and features

All models in the lineup have received 4- or 5-star safety ratings from Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP. Tata says its focus on safety reflects the needs of today’s car buyers.

Dealer network and local plans

At launch, Tata will be represented by 40 dealerships nationwide, with plans to expand to 60 by 2026. The brand also plans to support local job creation, technician training, and skills development programs. Financing options will be available to improve accessibility for buyers.

The new lineup

Harrier

A large SUV with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 125 kW and 350 Nm. Features include a 12.3-inch infotainment system, ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and Level 2 ADAS.

Curvv

A coupe-inspired SUV powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with 88 kW. Available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCA automatic. Notable features include a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and digital instrument cluster.

Punch

A compact SUV using a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 65 kW. Standout elements include 90-degree opening doors, a 10.5-inch infotainment screen, and multiple drive modes.

Tiago

A hatchback positioned as the entry model in the range. It features a 1.2-litre petrol engine, touchscreen infotainment, ABS, and dual airbags.

Looking ahead

Tata’s re-entry into the South African market comes with plans for growth in dealer coverage and aftersales support. The company expects its pricing strategy to make the new lineup a competitive option in the passenger car segment.
