We recently headed to Zwartkops Raceway for the launch of the updated Toyota GR Yaris, and this little hot hatch came ready to put in work. The headline update is the introduction of an all new eight speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, engineered for lightning fast shifts and improved driver focus. Add an uprated engine and a refined cockpit and Toyota’s rally bred hatch has taken a noticeable step forward.
Aggressive looks
Design wise, the GR Yaris looks even more purposeful than before. The updated front and rear treatment gives it an aggressive stance that is both good looking and functional. The widened rear hips are especially eye catching and remind you that this car was built with performance as a priority.
Plain but functional cabin
Inside, the GR Yaris keeps things simple but driver focused. The improved seating position immediately stands out and makes track sessions or mountain blasts even more enjoyable. A new 12.3 inch digital cluster delivers crisp graphics and useful information at a glance. The infotainment screen does feel on the smaller side, but the rest of the layout is ergonomically sound and rally inspired.

Selectable drive modes, Sport, Normal and Eco, let you tailor the car’s behaviour to your mood, from daily cruising to full send.
Powertrain
Under the bonnet sits Toyota’s 1.6 litre turbocharged three cylinder, now producing 210 kW and 400 Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels through the GR FOUR all wheel drive system, giving the hatch serious traction on gravel, track and public roads. The new automatic transmission joins the existing manual and is designed to shift fast enough to keep up with keen drivers.

Driving Impressions
We spent the better part of the day behind the wheel of the automatic and the GR Yaris remains a riot to drive. On track it offers plenty of grip with just enough playfulness to keep things entertaining. The uprated engine pulls hard and the new gearbox keeps the momentum going. Off the track it is surprisingly comfortable and composed, making it a genuinely usable performance daily.
The big question now is simple. Would you go for the auto or the manual?
