Mercedes-AMG has revealed the updated GLC 53 4MATIC+, bringing a revised six-cylinder engine and a stronger focus on driving dynamics to the performance SUV.

At the centre of the new model is a reworked 3.0-litre inline-six with both a conventional turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The setup produces around 330kW and up to 640Nm of torque during short overboost periods. The engine has been updated with a new cylinder head, intake system, and intercooler, all aimed at improving throttle response and torque delivery across the rev range.

It is paired with AMG’s nine-speed SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission and the fully variable Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. An electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential is available, along with a Drift Mode that allows the SUV to run in rear-wheel drive on closed courses.

The six-cylinder engine also benefits from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The integrated starter-generator can provide short bursts of electric assistance, improve efficiency, and smooth out start-stop operation.

Performance figures place the GLC 53 firmly in the high-performance SUV space. With the optional dynamic package, it can accelerate from 0–100km/h in around 4.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited, with a higher cap available when certain performance options are fitted.

Underneath, the GLC 53 uses AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive damping. Drivers can switch between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ damper settings, while multiple drive modes adjust engine, gearbox, steering, and chassis responses. Rear-axle steering is fitted as standard, improving manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds.

The all-wheel-drive system can vary torque distribution continuously between the front and rear axles. In certain drive modes, it becomes more rear-biased, while Drift Mode sends power only to the rear wheels.

Mercedes-AMG will also offer a Golden Accents Package. This optional styling package adds tech-gold exterior details, unique wheels, and interior trim with matching contrast stitching. Mercedes-Benz South Africa has not yet confirmed local availability of the GLC 53.
