Chinese manufacturers are moving quickly in the hybrid and plug-in hybrid space, and Haval is firmly in the mix. The H6 GT PHEV stands out on paper, but we recently spent time with it to see how those numbers translate in the real world.
Design and presence
The H6 GT PHEV looks the part. It leans into a sportier design language with revised front and rear bumpers, black 19-inch alloy wheels, oversized exhaust-style trims, and a prominent rear spoiler. The coupe-inspired roofline gives it a more aggressive stance, although it does come at the expense of some practicality.
Interior and features
Inside, the GT theme continues. Alcantara inserts, heated seats, and red accents give it a performance-focused feel. The cabin is modern and well laid out, with a customisable digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The panoramic sunroof adds a welcome sense of space and light.

That said, there are a few drawbacks. Smartphone connectivity is wired rather than wireless, which feels dated at this price point. Boot space is also slightly compromised because of the sloping rear design.
Performance and efficiency
Under the bonnet, the H6 GT PHEV pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 321kW and 762Nm. On paper, that is serious output, enough to see 0–100km/h completed in 4.9 seconds. In practice, the acceleration feels strong and immediate, making overtakes effortless and highway merging stress-free.
Where it really impresses is efficiency. During our time with the car, we managed fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km. On a full tank and a fully charged battery, we achieved around 890km of combined driving range. That falls short of the claimed 1,000km, but it remains strong in real-world use.
The brake feel could use refinement, particularly at low speeds where the transition between regenerative and friction braking feels slightly inconsistent. However, overall ride comfort and road manners are solid, making it easy to live with on a daily basis.

Verdict
The Haval H6 GT PHEV makes a compelling case for itself. It delivers serious power, impressive range, and a generous specification list at around the R800,000 mark. While there are minor niggles, including wired smartphone connectivity and slightly compromised boot space, the overall package is hard to ignore.
If you are looking for performance and efficiency in one SUV without stepping into premium European pricing territory, the H6 GT PHEV deserves a closer look.
