We recently headed out to Krugersdorp for our first taste of the updated Renault Captur, a model that has sold over 2 million units globally and continues to play an important role in the compact SUV segment.

Design and interior

At first glance, the changes are noticeable. The new grille, updated lighting signature, redesigned bumpers and fresh alloy wheel options ranging from 17 to 19 inches give the Captur a sharper, more modern look. A new Urban Grey colour option has joined the palette, adding to the refreshed appearance. Off the bat, we could not fault the styling. It genuinely enhanced the Captur’s appeal.

Inside, it remains a comfortable and well-finished space. A 10.4-inch touchscreen handles infotainment duties, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Practicality is also boosted by a sliding rear bench, while boot space expands to a claimed 1,596 litres with the seats folded.

Renault also placed emphasis on sustainability, incorporating recycled materials throughout the cabin. The range-topping Esprit Alpine derivative features heated and electrically adjustable front seats, a sunroof, blind spot monitoring and side parking sensors.

On the road

Power comes from a 1.3-litre turbopetrol engine producing 113kW and 270Nm, paired with an EDC gearbox. On the move, the Captur feels planted and the engine pleasantly responsive. It’s not overtly sporty, but it offers enough punch to feel lively in everyday driving.

Renault claims fuel consumption of 6.6L/100km. While we would need more time for comprehensive testing, initial impressions suggested it should be reasonably efficient for the segment.

Safety features includes Blind Spot Warning, Hill Start Assist and predictive eco driving, rounding out a fairly comprehensive package.

First impressions

Overall, the updated Captur comes across as a well-rounded product. The styling refresh works, the cabin feels modern and practical, and the drive experience was composed. The main question likely revolved around pricing in a competitive SUV market.
