We travelled to Kasane, Botswana, for the local launch of the refreshed Isuzu D-Max, where we spent time behind the wheel of the updated X-Rider. While this is very much an evolution rather than a revolution, the changes are meaningful and help keep the D-Max competitive in South Africa’s fiercely contested bakkie segment.

Sharper styling

The refreshed D-Max adopts a bolder front end with a redesigned grille, new LED lighting signatures, revised alloy wheel designs, and updated taillights. Isuzu has also made subtle aerodynamic improvements, including redesigned bumper elements and a larger rear spoiler that help reduce wind noise. Overall, we think the updates give the X-Rider a more modern and purposeful appearance without losing its rugged identity.

A more modern cabin

Inside, the updates are just as welcome. The cabin feels more contemporary than before, with improved infotainment systems across the range and a layout that remains practical and easy to live with. The X-Rider retains its sporty personality through red accents, contrast stitching, leather upholstery, and embroidered headrests, while overall refinement has taken another step forward.

Proven power

Our chariot during the launch was fitted with Isuzu’s proven 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, producing 140kW and 450Nm. It remains an excellent match for the X-Rider, delivering strong low-end torque, smooth power delivery, and effortless performance on both Botswana’s tar roads and gravel tracks.

Buyers can also opt for the updated 1.9-litre turbodiesel, which continues to produce 110kW and 350Nm but benefits from a revised turbocharger, improved fuel injection, and enhanced engine calibration. The result is improved throttle response, stronger low-end torque, and noticeably reduced turbo lag.

First impressions

After spending around 400km behind the wheel, the refreshed D-Max doesn’t try to reinvent a winning formula. Instead, Isuzu has focused on refining what already worked well. The styling is sharper, the cabin feels more modern, and the driving experience remains as composed and confidence inspiring as ever. Add the introduction of Rough Terrain Mode on all 4×4 models, and the updated D-Max is an even more capable all-rounder. With prices ranging from R433,860 to R1,211,910, the refreshed line-up remains a compelling option whether you’re looking for a dependable workhorse or a lifestyle bakkie.
