BMW 118 Pure Design review: Does it live up to the badge?

BMW’s entry into the premium hatchback segment has entered a new chapter with the 118 Pure Design. While the latest generation introduces fresh styling, updated technology and improved practicality, it’s a car that divides opinion. Some will appreciate its cleaner, more modern appearance, while others may prefer the more distinctive look of its predecessor. Either way, there’s no denying that the BMW 118 remains a hatchback that’s built with the driver in mind.

The Pure Design derivative comes well equipped, featuring LED headlights, 18-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, a contrasting black roof and Comfort Access. It’s a subtle-looking package that leans more towards elegance than aggression, although the overall design won’t appeal to everyone.

Inside, the cabin is unmistakably BMW. The quality of the materials is excellent, while the layout feels clean, modern and driver-focused. Dominating the dashboard is BMW’s latest Curved Display, which incorporates the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system into one seamless panel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with wireless smartphone charging and dual-zone climate control.

While the technology is impressive, not every change is an improvement. One of our biggest frustrations was having to adjust the climate controls through the touchscreen. Although it contributes to the minimalist interior, physical buttons would have made simple temperature adjustments far easier while driving.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 115kW and 230Nm. It’s paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. On paper, the figures may not sound particularly exciting, but on the road the engine feels smooth, responsive and eager when you put your foot down. BMW claims a combined fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

What impressed us most, however, were the driving dynamics. The steering is direct and confidence-inspiring, the chassis feels well balanced and the suspension strikes an excellent compromise between comfort and control. Despite driving the front wheels, the 118 still delivers the engaging experience that BMW is known for. It’s the sort of hatchback that encourages you to take the long way home.

The BMW 118 Pure Design proves that driving enjoyment still sits at the heart of BMW’s smallest hatchback. Its styling may divide opinions, and we’d much rather have physical climate controls than touchscreen-based ones, but those are relatively minor compromises.

Where the 118 truly shines is behind the wheel. The responsive turbocharged engine, sharp steering and excellent chassis make it one of the most rewarding premium hatchbacks to drive in its segment. Add a well-built cabin, the latest technology and everyday practicality, and it remains a compelling package.

At R761,895, it isn’t the most affordable option, but if driving dynamics matter as much as premium comfort and technology, the BMW 118 Pure Design deserves a place on your shortlist.
