Meet the all-new track ready BMW M2 CS

After much speculation on online forums and being teased by a plethora of spy shots and spy clips, BMW has finally revealed details and images of the hottest, and possibly the rarest limited-run BMW M2 coupe in town, the BMW M2 CS.

Less weight equals to more power

With the extensive use of carbon fibre with intelligent lightweight design, BMW was able to trim off some weight. The M2 CS weighs 1,550 kg. Much of its weight savings comes from using CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic) on the roof and bonnet which includes a new central air-vent for increased downforce, engine cooling and of course visual drama. The front splitter, mirror caps, Gurney (boot lid spoiler) and rear diffuser are all made of exposed carbon fibre and assist with channelling air around the car for improved aerodynamics.

    The performance figures

The M2 CS uses the S55 engine sourced from the BMW M4 Competition. It produces 331 kW (29 kW more than the M2 Competition) and 550 Nm of torque. Fitted with the optional 7-speed M DCT transmission, the M2 CS will sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds and will do the same in 4.2 seconds with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

    A daily track day car

What was once preserved for M4 models is now fitted as standard on the M2 CS. As standard, the M2 CS is fitted with Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes designed with the help of motor-racing gurus. The Adaptive M suspension has a choice of driver modes which alter the damper settings. Comfort mode is best suited for daily driving, Sport for a bit of spirited driving on b roads and Sport + for track days.

M Sport brakes, featuring callipers painted in red, are larger than those found on the M2 Competition (front: diameter 400 mm, rear: diameter 380 mm) and have been upgraded (front: six-piston fixed callipers, rear: four-piston fixed callipers) for extra stopping power.

For improved handling and traction, the M2 CS is fitted with Adaptive M Differential and specially tuned DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). It is running on 19-inch Y-spoke wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The recommended tyres for daily driving are the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

    The exterior and interior

The M2 CS borrows much of its styling from its bigger brother, the M4 CS. The most obvious exterior upgrades are the carbon fibre M kits, power-dome and rims finished with the optional matt gold. The M2 CS is available Alpine White, Misano Blue Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, and Hockenheim Silver Metallicbody colours. The interior looks familiar though with alcantara used on the dashboard, centre console, door panels and on the thick steering wheel.

The 2020 BMW M2 CS will be sold in limited numbers of 2,200. It is rumoured 500 of these units will be reserved for the US clients. BMW is yet to finalise unit allocation. We hope Mzansi will receive a few of these units for our BMW enthusiasts with enough money to spoil themselves with special-edition Bimmers. Pricing is yet to released.
