One thing with a winning formula, is that it breeds certainty and comfort, which is not a bad thing, in a world where there is too much change and uncertainty. We are obviously talking about the bakkie based SUV, the updated Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 4×4.

    Whats new?

The updated Toyota Fortuna 2.8 VX is a mid-size SUV that has been updated for 2023. It comes with a host of features and improvements that make it a worthy contender in its segment. Some of the standout features of the Fortuna 2.8 VX are the new lights, new grille and two new colours. It comes with a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 150kW/500Nm. This makes it more powerful than its predecessor and gives performance that is more in-line with the competition. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and quickly.

    Driving impressions

We managed to get around 9.4l/100km in our time with the Fortuner but this wasn’t achieved through normal driving. This required F1 level of focus in throttle inputs. Any ‘normal’ driving will see figures averaging 10l and above. Not too many people have the patients to attempt this but we felt that the Fortuner can do better and it did.

    Updated interior

Inside, the cabin is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room for passengers and cargo if the last row of seats are not used. It comes with leather seats that are heated for the front passenger and driver. The infotainment, while a bit dated now, remains user-friendly and comes with a decently sized touchscreen display. It also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it easy to connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps. This remains a wired option – and also leaves the handset floating about as the space for a handset is limited, especially with the cable connected.

    Updated exterior

On the outside, the Fortuner has a bold and stylish look. It comes with LED headlights and taillights, as well as a new front grille and bumper. The overall design is sleek and modern, making it an attractive option for those who want a stylish SUV.

    Driver assistance systems

Safety is also a priority with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.

    Our verdict

Overall, the 2023 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 VX is a solid SUV that offers a great combination of performance (by bakkie standards), comfort, and style. If you’re in the market for a mid-size SUV, the Fortuna 2.8 VX is definitely worth considering and is priced at R915,400.
