Driven: Range Rover’s Velar P400e Dynamic HSE

The Range Rover Velar came in with much fanfare, but the numbers have been underwhelming locally. It has received updates along the years, and we recently spent some time in the latest, refreshed Velar P400e Dynamic HSE.

    What’s new?

The updated Velar sports a newly designed grille which combines the characteristic floating roof and our test unit features optional Matrix LED headlights. The exterior updates may be moderate, but the Velar is aging gracefully. It’s certainly one of the best-looking premium SUVs on the market.

    Interior

Inside, the Range Rover Velar is minimalistic with improved craftsmanship and new materials. The latest evolution of Range Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment forms the centerpiece – a single 11.4-inch floating curved glass interface positioned higher and within easy reach, to help minimize distraction and reflections. The system works well, but we miss the traditional control knobs for simple things like adjusting the climate control. Throughout, however, the cabin is premium and quality is good.

    Power and Performance

Powering the Velar P400e is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and an electric motor. The engine and electric motor develop 221kW and 105kW respectively. The combined system outputs are 297kW and 640Nm. Land Rover claims the Velar can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 209km/h.

The Velar accelerates along quietly, and the switch over from electric only mode is smooth. It’s not the quickest of the mark, but the accomplished handling compensates for this. During our time with the P400e, we managed an electric range of 50km, from a claimed 69km on a full charge.

    Final Word

The updates have made the Velar maintain its great looks and manages to set it apart from all its competitors. It’s a marvel to pilot, but the base price of R 1,670,900 may be a deterrent to some. However, the all-round package makes that price worth it.

The pricing for the Range Rover Velar includes five-year vehicle/100,000km/eight-year hybrid battery warranty and a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
