Refreshed and refined: Toyota Corolla Cross facelift first drive impressions

We recently spent some time with the updated Toyota Corolla Cross, and in XR guise, it certainly ticks the right boxes. The facelift brings a refreshed design, improved technology, and subtle refinements that enhance its appeal in the competitive crossover segment. Given its strong reputation, it’s no surprise that the Corolla Cross is South Africa’s Best-Selling SUV, Best-Selling Hybrid Vehicle, and the Second-Best Selling Passenger Vehicle in the country.

    Exterior updates

Toyota has given the Corolla Cross a modernized look with sharper LED headlights, redesigned tail lamps, and a choice of new alloy wheels—17-inch for the Xi and XS models, while the XR and GR-Sport variants get larger 18-inch alloys. Two fresh colour options, Desert Gold and Oxide Bronze, further expand the range, giving buyers more customization options.

    Upgraded interior & technology

Step inside, and the changes are immediately noticeable. Toyota has improved cabin materials, added reclining rear seats for extra comfort, and introduced rear air vents for better passenger convenience. Higher-grade models now feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a new 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. Multiple USB Type-C ports ensure all devices stay charged on the go.

One of the standout features is the sound system, which delivers impressive audio quality—perfect for long road trips or daily commutes.

    Driving Experience & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Corolla Cross offers two powertrain options:

    • A 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 103 kW and 172 Nm, paired with a CVT transmission.
    • A self-charging hybrid model that produces 93 kW and 142 Nm, with Toyota claiming a fuel consumption figure of 4.3 L/100 km.

On the road, the CVT gearbox feels noticeably smoother, minimizing the droning effect that some drivers dislike. This makes the Corolla Cross more refined and enjoyable to drive, particularly in urban settings.

The hybrid model stands out for its fuel efficiency. While real-world consumption depends on driving conditions, achieving Toyota’s claimed 4.3 L/100 km should be within reach with careful driving.

    Pricing & final thoughts

The facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross range starts at R414,800, offering a blend of practicality, efficiency, and modern tech. While the new grille design might divide opinions, the overall styling updates and feature enhancements make it a compelling option in the compact SUV segment.
