Audi A3 Sedan Black Edition keeps compact luxury sharp and stylish

The Audi A3 has long been the entry point into the brand’s luxury sedan line-up, and for 2025, the Black Edition gives it an edge. With gloss black exterior accents, tinted details and sportier flourishes, it takes the clean lines of the A3 Sedan and adds just the right amount of menace. But beyond the styling tweaks, what is the experience like?

Power comes from a 1.4-litre TFSI turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 110 kW and 250 Nm. Paired with a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, it is a powertrain that favours smoothness over outright drama. The sprint to 100 km/h is dispatched in just under nine seconds, but the A3 is not about sprint figures. Instead, it shines in real-world usability: refined, quiet and efficient. Expect around 6.2 L/100 km in mixed driving and roughly 5.0 L/100 km on long, steady trips.

On the road, the A3 Sedan Black Edition feels balanced and composed. Comfort mode makes it an easy, no-stress commuter, soaking up bumps with a level of polish that feels more premium than its size suggests. Switch into Dynamic mode and the gearbox sharpens up, throttle response livens, and the car reminds you that Audi DNA still runs sporty at its core. It is not a sports sedan, but it has just enough agility to put a smile on your face when you ask for it.

The Black Edition treatment continues inside. The interior is classic Audi minimalism, with clean lines, premium materials and a tech-first approach. A fully digital Virtual Cockpit and a crisp 10.1-inch infotainment screen dominate the dashboard, while gloss black inserts, a black headliner and subtle S line touches elevate the cabin atmosphere. The driving position is spot-on, and everything feels driver-centric.

Practicality has not been forgotten. Rear space is reasonable for a compact sedan. Two adults will be comfortable, while three across becomes tight. The 425-litre boot makes it usable as a daily driver or even a small family car.

Safety and technology are strong points. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, multiple airbags and parking sensors are all included.

Pricing for the A3 Sedan starts from R823,200, which undercuts some rivals while delivering plenty of Audi polish. The Black Edition adds a sense of exclusivity, ensuring the A3 Sedan feels more special than a base luxury car. This is proof that compact does not have to mean compromise. With sleek styling, refined driving and a cabin that feels every bit Audi, it offers an attractive entry into premium sedan ownership, blending a subtle sporty edge with everyday usability. The A3 Sedan Black Edition kicks off at R849,900.
