    Launch drive: The new Suzuki DZire grows up without losing its charm

    Suzuki Auto South Africa has launched the new DZire, and we recently spent some time driving it through the concrete jungle of Gauteng to see just how much it has grown up. The new DZire brings a fresh design, upgraded technology and safety features, and Suzuki’s tried and tested 1.2 litre petrol engine that promises impressive fuel efficiency.

    Refined styling and practical updates

    The new DZire GL+ stands out with its sharper, more assertive front end featuring angular halogen headlights, a redesigned bumper and black 15 inch alloy wheels that give it a sportier stance. At the rear, subtle changes to the bumper and LED and bulb combination taillights complete the updated look. Buyers can choose from seven exterior colours, adding a bit of personal flair to this budget friendly sedan.

    Inside, Suzuki has focused on comfort and connectivity. The cabin features impractical beige fabric upholstery, a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reverse camera and both USB A and USB C ports. Boot space remains generous at 378 litres, which should suit small families or city commuters perfectly.

    Powertrain and efficiency

    Under the bonnet sits Suzuki’s familiar 1.2 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine, producing 60 kW and 112 Nm. Buyers can opt for either a 5 speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is a standout figure, with Suzuki claiming just 4.4 L per 100 km on the combined cycle.

    Safety

    All new DZire models come standard with six airbags (front, side and curtain), side impact door beams, ABS brakes with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability programme, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX anchor points at the rear.

    In addition, occupants have access to pre tensioning and force limiting three point seatbelts (two up front and three at the rear) with audible and visual reminders. This impressive specification helped the new DZire achieve a five star adult and four star child occupant protection rating in a recent Global NCAP crash test.

    Driving impressions

    After spending the day behind the wheel, we are impressed by how well rounded the new DZire feels. The refreshed design gives it a more mature and premium appearance, while the cabin materials and ergonomics are solid for this segment.

    The 1.2-litre engine delivers enough punch for urban driving, and we found the 5-speed manual gearbox to be the ideal pairing. It is smooth, predictable and easy to live with. The DZire’s suspension setup deserves praise too, soaking up Johannesburg’s less than perfect roads with ease.

    It is not without flaws though. The beige fabric seats, while visually pleasing, are not the most practical choice for a family car, and taller passengers may find rear legroom slightly tight. It also struggles a bit on steep inclines, especially when loaded with passengers or luggage.

    Pricing and verdict

    The new Suzuki DZire range is priced from R224,900 to R266,900, making it one of the most affordable sedans in its class while offering excellent value for money.

    Overall, the new DZire remains one of South Africa’s most compelling budget sedans. It is reliable, efficient and now a little more refined. We look forward to spending more time with it for a full road test soon.
