We recently drove the new BMW X5 xDrive50e, a plug-in hybrid model with a claimed electric range of between 94 and 110 km. It is positioned as an SUV that can be comfortably used for daily run-arounds or commutes of less than 50 km. More than that, it offers enough power to be considered a performance SUV when required.
The X5 has always been seen as an aspirational luxury SUV in the local market. It has earned its place as one of the leading SUVs in the large luxury segment. The model has undergone a midlife update, bringing changes to both the interior and exterior. The plug-in hybrid variant received most of these updates, and we had the opportunity to spend time behind the wheel.
Updates
The refreshed BMW X5 retains its familiar sleek design. It now features redesigned slim headlight units, updated LED taillights, and a revised kidney grille that can also be illuminated. These design changes enhance its presence and visual robustness without losing its street credibility.

Inside, the cabin offers a wide selection of premium materials and the latest technology from BMW. The modern cockpit layout is centred around the all-digital BMW Curved Display, which consists of a 12.3-inch driver information screen and a 14.9-inch central media display. Optional extras fitted to our test car included a panoramic glass sunroof and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond sound system, to mention a few. The infotainment system works well, and the presence of physical buttons makes it easier to use without hunting through menus. Overall, the cabin is designed with comfort and convenience in mind.
Space is generous for both front and rear occupants. The battery pack does reduce boot capacity from 650 litres to 500 litres, but it remains usable for everyday needs.

Engine
The plug-in hybrid X5 xDrive50e features an updated drivetrain combining a six-cylinder inline petrol engine with an electric motor. Together, the system produces a total output of 360 kW and 700 Nm of torque.
Performance
The electric motor assists the engine with smooth and swift response during acceleration. Piloting the X5 daily is made more bearable thanks to the standard air suspension, which contributes to a comfortable ride quality. Our time with the X5 was spent driving between home and the office, which has a charging station. This was convenient and meant we were constantly using the electric motor without depleting the fuel. The distance from home and office is about 30km return trip. It was well under the 102km that we got during our time. BMW claims a consumption of 1.9 L/100km for the X5 xDrive50e. However, we managed a return of 5.6L/100km.
Final word
This is probably the car we didn’t know we needed. Generally, the sweet spot with the range was usually the 30d but the xDrive50e offers a different perspective to the norm. Yes, the price walk between the two siblings is almost R115,000 but the if your lifestyle has charging facilities catered for daily. We would suggest you shortlist the xDrive50e.
