Alfa Romeo Junior first drive: Italy’s first EV lands in SA

We recently made our way to Avianto in Muldersdrift for the local launch of the Alfa Romeo Junior, marking the Italian brand’s first move into fully electric mobility in South Africa.

The Junior range consists of two electric derivatives. The standard Elettrica produces 118kW, while the range-topping Veloce steps things up to 207kW. On paper, the difference is significant, and from behind the wheel, it certainly feels that way.

    Design and cabin

The Junior carries familiar Alfa Romeo styling cues. The scudetto grille remains front and centre, paired with the trilobo face and the biscione emblem on the C-pillar. It looks unmistakably Alfa, even in EV form.

The Veloce adds extra visual drama with 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers and a contrasting roof, while the standard Elettrica rides on 18-inch wheels and keeps the look more understated.

Inside, the cabin is clean and modern. A 10.25-inch digital setup handles driver information and infotainment, with wireless smartphone connectivity included. Materials feel solid and well assembled, and there are sporty touches throughout that reinforce the Alfa character.

    On the road

We spent time with the range-topping Junior Veloce, and it quickly became clear that Alfa has not forgotten how to make a car feel engaging. The 207kW electric setup delivers strong, immediate acceleration. It feels lively rather than overwhelming, and more than capable in everyday driving.

The steering is sharp and direct, giving the Junior a nimble feel through corners. The chassis feels planted when pushing on, yet the ride quality remains firm but manageable for daily use. It strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness.

Rear space is adequate but not class leading, and as with most EVs, range will vary depending on how enthusiastically you use the available performance.

    First impressions

Overall, the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce brings genuine flair to the compact electric segment. It looks distinctive, feels well put together and offers driving dynamics that stay true to the brand’s identity.

Pricing starts at R799,900 for the Junior Elettrica, while the Veloce is priced at R999,900.
